InMode vs Onda for a Double Chin: 6 Differences Between the Two Fat-Targeting Lifts

Dr. Designer Clinic Yeongdeungpo · Updated 2026-09 · Korean original ↗

"For a double chin, InMode or Onda?" It is the most common question from patients worried about lower-face fat. Both are known as "fat-targeting lifts", but they use different energy and handle fat differently. Here is how each works, which suits which concern, and when we combine them.

1. InMode: radiofrequency that grips the tissue

InMode uses bipolar radiofrequency (RF). The facial handpiece holds the tissue in light contact and delivers RF heat into the fat layer. Fat cells are affected by the heat and the surrounding tissue contracts, tidying the line. It is typically used for localised pockets such as a double chin or jowl fat, and the treated area is small and focused.

2. Onda: microwaves that warm a wider area

Onda uses microwave energy. Microwaves react selectively with the fat layer, so while the surface is cooled, heat is delivered to the fat and the dermis. Rather than gripping one spot, Onda treats the cheeks and jawline as a surface, and it is chosen when fat reduction and firming are wanted together.

4. Which suits which concern

What we look at is the shape of the concern. A distinct pocket of fat under the chin or at the jowls points to the focused device first. A face that looks heavy overall with reduced firmness points to the surface approach. Many "fat" concerns are actually sagging or muscle, so we palpate and examine before choosing a device. Sometimes the right answer is Ultherapy or Botox, not a fat treatment.

5. Sessions and spacing

Both are course treatments. InMode is usually planned as several sessions 2–4 weeks apart; Onda as about three sessions 2–4 weeks apart. Results build gradually over 4–8 weeks after each session as the tissue contracts.

6. When we combine them

A focused pocket plus general heaviness is common. In that case InMode handles the pocket and Onda the surface, in the same session or alternating. Both can also be paired with Ultherapy for deeper lift.

Who we do not recommend it for

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding patients.
  • Pacemakers, metal implants in the area, or a bleeding disorder.
  • Very little facial fat, where these devices have nothing to treat and may hollow the face.
  • Active infection or inflammatory skin disease in the area.

On the day

  • No numbing is needed for most patients; come with a clean face.
  • Mild redness or warmth for a few hours is normal.
  • Drink water and avoid alcohol for 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for a double chin?
A distinct pocket: InMode. A softer, wider fullness with loose skin: Onda. We decide after examination.
Can I have both?
Yes, they are often combined when concerns overlap.
Does it hurt?
Both feel mainly warm or hot, though pain tolerance varies. InMode grips and warms; Onda glides and warms. Numbing is rarely needed.
Is it a weight-loss treatment?
No. It reshapes small areas of facial fat; it does not change body weight.
When do results appear?
Gradually over 4–8 weeks after each session, with the final result after the course.
