Botox in Seoul: 6 Things to Know Before Your First Injection

"Is wrinkle Botox the same as jaw Botox?" "Does it stop working if you get it too often?" We hear these every week. Same name, different injection depending on the area and goal. Here is how they differ, why resistance happens, what the evidence says, and who should not have it.
1. What Botox is
Botox injects a very small amount of botulinum toxin to temporarily reduce the activity of a muscle that is overworking or overdeveloped. It softens expression lines caused by muscle movement, and it acts on an enlarged masseter to give the lower face a slimmer look. It is injection-only with quick recovery, but it is not permanent: muscle function returns over months, so it is a treatment that needs repeating.
2. Wrinkle, jaw and skin Botox are different injections
| Wrinkle | Jaw (masseter) | Skin Botox | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Soften frown, forehead and crow's-feet lines | Reduce the chewing muscle for a slimmer lower face | Refine pores, fine lines and texture |
| Injected into | Expression muscles | Masseter muscle | Shallow skin layer, spread widely |
| Results from | 3–7 days, gradually | 4–6 weeks, gradually | 1–2 weeks |
Dose and injection points are planned differently for each. You do not need to memorise the names. Tell us what bothers you and we will design the rest.
3. Why resistance happens
The story that "it stops working if you get it often" comes from neutralising antibodies. Repeated high doses at short intervals can make the body treat the toxin as foreign and produce antibodies, after which the same dose works less. That is why we keep a sufficient interval between sessions and do not recommend more units than needed. The interval is decided by the doctor based on the product, the area and your previous response. Repeating too soon may not give the result you expect.
4. How strong is the evidence
Botulinum toxin is the most studied ingredient in aesthetic medicine, with decades of data and FDA approval for frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet. Masseter and skin Botox are widely practised off-label uses with reported clinical experience and studies. Side effects are mostly temporary and local: bruising, a heavy brow if the dose is too high for the forehead, or a temporarily uneven smile if the wrong muscle is affected. Choosing an experienced injector reduces these risks.
5. What to expect: results, duration, interval
- Wrinkles: visible from 3–7 days, peak at 2 weeks, lasting 3–4 months.
- Jaw: slimming over 4–6 weeks, lasting 4–6 months; repeated treatments keep the muscle smaller for longer.
- Skin Botox: smoother texture from 1–2 weeks, lasting 2–3 months.
- Interval: usually 3 months or more, decided by the doctor based on the product, the area and your previous response.
- Brands: Korean and imported toxins (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport and others) with different price points. The vial is opened in front of you.
6. Who we do not recommend it for
- Pregnant or breastfeeding patients.
- Neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis, or certain antibiotics that interact with the toxin.
- Active infection at the injection site.
- Patients expecting to lift heavy sagging; Botox relaxes muscle, it does not lift skin.
On the day
- Avoid alcohol the day before to reduce bruising. Do not stop prescribed medication on your own; tell us in advance about any medication and supplements you take.
- No numbing is needed for most areas; ice is available.
- Do not rub or massage the area, avoid lying flat for about four hours, and skip hard exercise for the rest of the day.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I get wrinkles and jaw done on the same day?
- Yes, they are commonly done together in one visit.
- Does it hurt? Will I bruise?
- A few quick pinpricks with a fine needle. Small bruises are possible and fade in days.
- How often should I repeat it? I am worried about resistance.
- Usually every 3–6 months depending on the area. The interval is decided by the doctor based on the product, the area and your previous response, at the lowest effective dose.
- Can I go straight back to normal life?
- Yes. Avoid rubbing the area, sauna and heavy exercise for 24 hours.
- Will my face look frozen?
- We use a conservative dose placed correctly and aim to soften lines while keeping natural expression. Responses vary, and we can adjust at a two-week review.
