Aptos Thread Lift: 6 Things to Know Before You Book, Including How Long It Lasts

"Threads or Ultherapy?" "The threads dissolve, so how can the effect last?" With so many treatments called "lifting", confusion is normal. Here is what an Aptos thread lift is, how it differs from energy devices, what the evidence says, and who we advise against it.
1. What an Aptos thread lift is
Aptos inserts dissolvable threads with small cogs (barbs) under the skin to physically pull sagging tissue back into position and anchor it. It is done without incisions, so it is far less demanding than surgery, and the lifted line is visible immediately. It is used mainly for descended cheeks, a blurred jawline and nasolabial folds: it repositions tissue rather than tightening skin. As it is not surgery, the amount of change has limits, and we say so up front.
2. How the effect lasts after the threads dissolve
Aptos threads are medical absorbable threads that break down in the body over time. New collagen forms around each thread, and the tissue changes may help maintain the result after the thread is absorbed. Early on, the thread pulls; later, the tissue changes provide support. How long this lasts varies from person to person.
3. Threads vs Ultherapy, Shurink and Onda
| Aptos thread lift | Energy lifting (Ultherapy · Shurink · Onda) | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Cog threads pull and anchor sagging tissue | Ultrasound or RF heat tightens from inside |
| Results from | Immediately visible pull | Gradually over 2–3 months |
| Best for | Clearly descended cheeks and jawline | General loss of firmness, mild sagging |
| Downtime | Swelling and tightness for several days | Almost none |
It is not about which is superior but how far the tissue has dropped. Visible descent suits threads; general laxity suits energy. Many plans combine both. Aptos is one of the earliest brands to develop barbed threads.
4. How strong is the evidence
Absorbable barbed threads have been studied for about two decades. Case series have reported early improvement in cheek and jawline position, with results that soften over 12–24 months, although study methods and long-term data have limitations. Reported complications are mostly minor and temporary: swelling, bruising, dimpling, a feeling of tightness, and occasionally a thread that needs adjustment. Outcomes depend heavily on thread choice, vector planning and the doctor's experience.
5. What to expect: results, duration, downtime
- Results: immediate lift; the final line settles once swelling clears in 2–4 weeks, then collagen support builds.
- Duration: typically 12–24 months for the lift, varying from person to person.
- Downtime: swelling and tenderness for 3–7 days, tightness when opening the mouth wide for 1–2 weeks, bruising possible.
- Session: about 60 minutes under local anaesthetic. Threads are counted and opened in front of you.
6. Who we do not recommend it for
- Pregnant or breastfeeding patients.
- Very thin skin with little subcutaneous fat, where threads may show or dimple.
- Severe sagging with heavy excess skin, where surgery may be the better option.
- Active infection, bleeding disorders, or autoimmune disease affecting the skin.
On the day
- Avoid alcohol for 2–3 days before. Do not stop prescribed medication on your own; tell us in advance about any medication and supplements you take.
- Eat before you come; the session is done under local anaesthetic.
- Plan 1–2 weeks with no important events, and avoid wide mouth opening, facial massage and sleeping face-down for two weeks.
Frequently asked questions
- Threads or Ultherapy?
- Descended cheeks and jowls that need repositioning: threads. Overall firmness with mild sagging: Ultherapy. Often both, spaced apart.
- Does it hurt?
- Local anaesthetic reduces the discomfort of insertion; sensitivity varies. Expect soreness and tightness for a few days afterwards.
- How many threads, and how long does it last?
- Usually 10–20 threads depending on the areas. The lift typically holds 12–24 months, varying from person to person.
- Can I go straight back to normal life?
- Light activities yes, but expect swelling for several days and avoid wide mouth opening and massage for two weeks.
- Does it work for heavy sagging?
- It improves but will not match surgery. We will tell you honestly if a surgical consultation is the better route.
